GHOST GEAR

WWF

Abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear from the fishing industry is commonly referred to as 'ghost gear'. The issue not only contributes significantly to the problem of plastic pollution in our ocean, but also seriously injures and kills marine life.

MISSION

EXPLORATION

Design a poster for a current social cause to bring awareness to the viewers. The social cause for the poster is about ghost gear.

To begin the project I researched the cause and effect of the abandoned fishing equipment. From there, I went through many stages of sketches.

Black poster with writing in green and white. A lot of flying elements.
The front view hardcover book. The cover has black writing and numbers.

APPROACH

OUTCOME

With the design of the poster, I wanted to enhance the term 'ghost gear' with the combination of the horrific effects. I knew the process would have to include an exploration of methods to bring in a style inspired by horror movie posters.

The subject for the final poster is a warped net with 3 areas heavily shadowed to represent the eyes and the mouth to portray the visual of a ghost.

The tagline of the poster —what haunts our waters — is warped to add to the feel of a ghost story. Both net and tagline was scanned and then photoshopped with a halftone bitmap.
